1 out of 5 stars Just don't do it   February 20, 2008

On a brand new laptop with Vista installed, its simply uninspiring. Nothing evil, just dull. Perhaps 2 stars.
Its a completely different matter on an older machine. Unless you are a wealthy masochist don't think about upgrading. You will end up having to replace hardware, throw away peripherals that no longer work and dump software that no longer functions. It is buggy, slow (your going to get through a lot of coffee waiting for file transfers) but worst of all its just plain disappointing. It should come in a beige box.
My advice is get some of the new bits via add-ins and keep XP.
Windows Vista, welcome to the Austin Allegro of computing.

1 out of 5 stars Rubbish   February 17, 2008

Utter rubbish, uses up so many resources that it makes my 1-year old mid-high spec machine cough and splutter.

I have since went back to XP and truly glad my Vista experience is behind me.

If you are using XP, then stick with it. Dont waste your money.

4 out of 5 stars Its Good, If Your Pc Can Handle it   February 14, 2008

My new acer laptop came with vsta pre-installed, and 2gb of ddr2 ram, this passes all the checks microsoft say a pc should have. Vista works fine on my laptop, and look great. However if your pc has less than about 2gb of ram dont buy vista. Yes some people say 1gb is enough, but believe me its not.I am used to XP, and so a change to vista is a huge shock, it does take qute a few days to find even simple things like "run", even when you do find the the UAC bugs you. The OS is good though, i have found no major issues with it, only a few which can be quickly sorted, networking permisssions etc. It boots very quickly also, which is a plus as XP dosn't. Vista also is a lot better at colosing programmes which hang.

i have found Vista to be a good os, however i have seen friends pc's struggle withit due to their system specs. If you buy vista make sure your pc has at least almost double wat the upgrade advisor says, or you may be in for a nasty shock

3 out of 5 stars Still haven't felt the WOW   February 8, 2008

I was really excited when i got Windows Vista on my HP laptop-but the thrill quickly wore off. Firstly, Vista is glitchy and freezes a lot. That i can handle, but there are still compatibility issues, after a year! Other than that, it works, but it's all just eyecandy. For me, Vista is basically XP with a load of flashing buttons. Vista is more useful because it is less unobtrusive to the eye, file management is good too. Don't get me wrong, it isn't a bad operating system, far from it, it's just not really that good either. It works fine most of the time, and it's speedy enough and reliable enough most of the time, but it's just there-nothing really makes me think 'wow'-just a whole load of boxes. I'll stick with Vista by all means, because it does the job-but it's not all it's made out to be. My advice is to get Vista only if you get a new computer-don't buy it and upgrade-it's not really worth it

5 out of 5 stars A good solid reliable OS   January 28, 2008

I had heard many negative reviews about the restrictive nature of Vista and many people have said that they have gone back to XP. However, Vista is a very stable OS with many great new features. If you find it too restrictive, then many of the options can be turned off to allow the user more freedom. However, for the novice, these restrictions could save them from damaging their system.
There are many versions of the OS so you need to choose carefully (dont buy the home edition). I would aslo recommend that your PC has a good spec, otherwise you will be unable to gain the benefits, or experience Aero.
Overall, if you have the system capitability issue sorted out, then Vista is as good as any other, and I would certainly not return to XP. THe only annoyance, is that some applications do not run on Vista, and Microsoft have to rectify the problems with hibernation.
