5 out of 5 stars At last - something serious in a small body!!!   December 28, 2007

I bought this camera for my brother for his birthday. He is a bit of a photographer so I wanted to get something that is 'everyday' useful to him. He absolutely loves it. My advice, if you are interested in this camera, is don't underestimate it. This is not just a point and shoot camera. It is easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of brilliant technology in the NV20. The smart touch is a revolution to the camera menus. It means you can access everything quickly which is needed with the amount of stuff on this. No more menu, then sub-menu, then sub-sub-menu etc! Boring! My brother has chunky digits too and uses it fine so I find it strange that people struggle with this feature. It takes a while to get used to but is the best gadget I've seen in a long time. I can't rave about it enough.
In photography the lens is everything! People get hung up about megapixels but that is not what is the most important thing. So the NV20 comes with Schneider Kreuznach lens - that's very good in the photography world. Saying that though, it does also have 12MP so you can still blow up those cheesy photos of flowers for the wall canvas!
The NV20 has a fast processer which means there isn't all that annoying time delay when taking a photo - I think this is very needed when using the advanced shake reduction modes. Some cameras lag terribly but this is quite quick.
If you get this camera - try messing with the light balance. It's really clever with all the options as to which type of lighting you have in a room. And definately get to grips with the red eye fix. I love that technology being on the camera so that you can remove red eye after you've taken a picture. My nephew always has terrible red eye in photos and I cannot be bothered to edit every photo in photoshop.
Bad points? There has to be some! Sorry! The design is a little 'man-like' for me. I do like black cameras as I think they look quite smart but I'm not a retro kind of person but I guess this is very subjective. Also, I bought this a while ago and paid a lot more which is really annoying! But I see it has come down in price now.
I definately recommend this camera to someone upgrading to a more serious compact camera.

5 out of 5 stars Great little camera for a great price....   December 25, 2007

Just wanted to quite frankly give the camera some credit it deserves. Ultimately this is a point and shoot camera, and as such, in my opinion, is one of the best of its kind at being so. If you want to take professional photographs, then please feel free to buy an SLR or digital SLR and do so.

In my opinion this is a great camera for capturing those holiday moments, for taking pictures of the kids and the dog at christmas, for all those timeless memories, for just being a camera. The quality is very good, it feels great and solid, and looks even better. I find the images so much better than my previous camera, and is a fantastic camera to take away with you, or just pick up on that special occassion and snap away. I find the menus easy to navigate, and if you've ever used a touch screen phone, handheld, palm or ipod for that matter, then you'll find the buttons a great feature to this model.

If you want to pretend your a professional photographer and take pictures of flowers in the rain, so close up you can almost see through it, and then sit back and wish how you'd took it up years ago and made a fortune selling your artistic delights.... then don't buy this camera.

However, if like me, you want a great quality, stylish little camera, to take images of (IMHO) great quality for all those special times and for your memories, then this is the beauty to go for!!

2 out of 5 stars Nice to look at, nice to touch, but hands off please, thank's very much!   December 17, 2007

I bought this after my IXUS 850IS developed a fault (lens error, due to sand ingress) and the nice guys at canon wanted 100 to fix it. Thought to myself I'd rather pay another 50 or so to upgrade to 12MP than cough up 100 to get the old camera fixed. What a mistake.

The camera is truely stunning to look at, I love the styling but looks can be deceptive.

1. Image quality is not bad in daylight but get the beast inside and you know all about it - it's rubbish, the video mode is even worse indoors - forget it for your evening out with the lads or lasses taking that amusing moment video.

2. The smart buttons on the back drive me up the wall, they are super sensitive and if your fingers are bigger than a 10 year old's you are going to find it nearly impossible to select the feature/functionality you want without swearing profusely at the camera - naturally by the time you've fiddled with it the picture you wanted to take is gone forever.

3. The software user interface is frankly cr*p, the iconography is perhaps intuative if you happen to be Korean but it loses a lot in the translation to a western brain.

4. The functionality is poor considering the "in your face styling" in short it is very basic, nothing like as good as IXUS. It almost drove me mad trying to work out how to play back a video on the camera screen - I had to resort to reading the manual!!!! And even then the instructions were hard to find and unclear.

5. The galery mode is terrible, you can only scroll right to left or left to right (3x3 format) so if you wanna move from bottom right image to top left you have to scroll through 9 pics there is no vertical scroll feature and as I said before, because the smart buttons are super sensitive and my fingers are a tad bigger than a 10 year olds the chances of stopping at and then selecting the image you want are, well, unrealistically low.

To cut a long story short, I'm either gonna sell it or give it to the wife who will quite happily only use "auto" mode with auto flash and isn't in the slightest bit interested in creative photography.

I'm gonna splash out on a canon IXUS 960IS I think and if you've got any inclination other than using the camera in auto mode perhaps that would be a good option.

4 out of 5 stars Very happy with camera, excellent build quality and features!!!   November 22, 2007

I searched the web for ages, before deciding to buy this camera. As I'm not planning to upgrade again for a long time, I'd need to buy something of considerably high spec.

The first thing I'd say is that this camera is extremely stylish, with excellent build quality. The retro design is second to none, with the black stainless steel shell reassuring you of this quality.

The only disappointing part of the camera build are the control buttons on the rear of the camera, these are some sort of coated plastic and have already started chipping at the edges. This is however, only a minor gripe.

The flash pops up on it's own, when required. Then has to be pressed down manually when finished.

The pictures I've taken so far, have nearly all come out well. It does take a while to master all the camera features, but worth taking the time. I've been taking pictures on both the AUTO and MANUAL settings. The auto setting is fine for most situations, but worth tweaking the manual mode for maximum picture quality.

Overall very happy with this camera, I upgraded from a 4MP Cannon and just can't believe the difference in picture quality.

Well worth a look..
