1 out of 5 stars waste of ink, paper, time, money!   July 29, 2008

I bought this machine today at a very cheap price expecting it to be an equal or better to my 3 yr old DX3850 which I had paid 50 for when new. As with most technology which gets better and cheaper with time, I hoped for better, but expected at least equal results... WRONG!!!
The printer is clunky, noisy, bulkier than my old one and when it came to printing, the colour was appalling, very dull despite it claiming to be DURABRITE ULTRA, the same inks used in my old printer. The picture was grainier than my old one, the colours were worse and there was even dotted 'score' marks where the printer had fed the paper through. I was lucky to be able to A/B test the printer next to my existing one and despite setting both on the same setting, highest photo quality, good paper etc, the results were worlds apart. My old printer is even using cheap compatible inks at less than 1 each and still giving superior results. I will be going back to Asda on my way home to return the printer and get my 25 back - may not sound much but its vastly overpriced at that!! I'm now going to look for a used dx3850!!

1 out of 5 stars Absolute Dog of a printer   July 25, 2008

By far the worst printer I have ever had, a complete dog of a machine. I am very supprsed that you can buy a printer of this low quality from Epson, they are putting a lot at risk selling this machine.

I have not found anything good about it, I have not found the printing to be of a decent quality which is the main thing you want from a printer, you have agro even trying to load the paper into it half the time, and as for the ink, you find yourself throwing away over half full cartridges because the printer says they are empty, for this reason alone I have thrown my DX4400 away and I only bought it 6 weeks ago, I also had a lot of trouble trying to use Non Original Epson cartridges in it.

I have owned several Epson printers over the years but that was the last one I will ever buy.

4 out of 5 stars Epson again   July 2, 2008

When the time came to replace my printer I looked at the reviews and I was surprised by the adverse comments on the DX4400. Despite these I went ahead and bought it - 5 stars to Amazon for their v. fast and efficient service. The DX is a little noisier than my last Epson but nothing to complain about. Touch wood the initial cartridges are still going strong, installation was easy and | am satisfied with my purchase

2 out of 5 stars Cheaper Than Chips, But Just As Nasty   June 10, 2008

These days almost any photo printer will produce prints that are indistinguishable from the real thing (whatever that is!) Similarly, any scanner should be able to capture with a degree of fidelity that would have been hard to achieve even five years ago.

So, the value of a device like this comes from how it performs in its intended role, rather than from the quality of the results.

As far as this machine is concerned there is good news and bad news.

The good news.

*It's cheap.
*It's bulky.
*The four ink cartridges are individually replaceable and also cheap.
*The quality (on scanning, copying and printing) is good.
*The scanning software is comprehensive, with image correction and the facility to scan multiple images in one pass.
*Scanning is quite fast.

The bad news.

*It's noisy. Very noisy.
*Printing speeds are very slow.
*Starting from cold takes forever, making printing single jobs an extremely time consuming process.
*There is no useful draft mode, unless you count "practically invisible" as useful.
*The black ink reservoir is the same capacity as the colour reservoirs, meaning it will run out with frightening regularity.
*The angled scanning surface doesn't hold the originals in place as you close the lid.
*There is a distinct lack of detailed printing options.

This is a cheap but not so cheerful solution to home printing and scanning. I bought it for a one off job (scanning huge numbers of old photographs) and will happily consign it to the spoil heap of history as soon as the job is done.

And I won't be buying Epson in a hurry again.

1 out of 5 stars Will cost you lots to run. Not economical.   March 28, 2008

The printer arrives with some ink cartridges. Immediately i installed them the low ink light flashed and i was not able to do any printing. I phoned Epson and they said they supply them with only a small amount of ink- understatement.
The size of the print cartridges are so small. The black is the same small size as the colour cartidges. I went to a refill shop to refill my epson originals and they informed me that they were only able to refill the cartridges when they had over 40% ink. This makes it not viable.
The replacement cartriges, which i bought through Amazon, did not work in this printer. so even less options.
To be honest, i would rather have an older printer, with decent sized cartridges. I would avoid this printer.
