Never again November 1, 2008 I bought two of these disks. One didn`t work at all on arrival (no power) The other worked for two days then packed up -no power like the other one.
Total waste of money. Am currently trying to get the first one replaced but can`t get the second one changed as it involves sending it back and it now contains all my private info (bank details etc) that I can`t remove as it doesen`t turn on. May as well chuck the money down the drain and save yourself a lot of time. Will never touch Seagate again !
Excellent drive if treated with respect October 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this drive to keep an additional backup of my photographs and as such I am pleased with the performance. Initially I did have problems with the drive becoming unavailable at random intervals, but this would appear to be a problem when the PC is using another USB device whilst accessing this disk. For example, I cannot print a document or run my scanner while copying files to this drive because there is a good chance the drive will 'vanish' and no longer be accessible without restarting Windows. Whether this is a limitation of USB, the drive or my ageing PC I know not, and it isn't really a problem now that I know of this pitfall. The drive management software is quite basic. It can test the drive, change the 'sleep' time and such exciting things but doesn't have an option to stop the drive prior to disconnection. This is a little inconvenient because the USB manager in Windows quite often thinks the drive is in use when it isn't and so won't stop it. However, I do think it was worth purchasing and has been very reliable. In addition, Amazon really knows how to pack items like this. The parcel was about three times the size of the boxed drive with an inordinate amount of padding.
Not well pleased October 26, 2008 I have been silly enough to buy two of these. The first failed when the drive gave up...fair enough; that happens sometimes with drives.
The second failed after about two weeks, when the USB connection dropped inside the case, which I then discovered is almost impossible to open. Shoddy plastic crap. I want a metal one next time. Build quality matters.
Does the job October 21, 2008 Recently purchased from Amazon and quickly received using their "Super Saver" delivery. A good price for 500GB. Quite an attractive design with a fairly small footprint. True "plug And play" and quiet in operation. In fact, other than the slight "pulsing" of the vertical yellow strip, it's hard to tell it is working. I've had a smaller capacity Seagate external HD for some time now and if this one is as reliable then I'll be more than happy. The pre-loaded backup software is not as good, in my opinion, as the Windows XP version which I'll be using. It's very basic and difficult to know what is actually being backed up! So other than the backup software, well worth buying if you need an external and separate means of backing up your stuff.
Excellent 500GB Drive October 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have used this drive for 1 year now with no problems. Whisper quiet and warm during operation, very stylish housing and easy to switch off via plug-play manager. Thoroughly recommend this drive and indeed Seagate drives in general as I have used them since the 1990's with no problems.
