2 out of 5 stars The most non user friendly software imaginable!   September 19, 2006

Probably the most annoyingly non user designed software imaginable. Impossible to make corrections to input problems even on the one user accounts! If only one could send it back! Sage website matches software in being non user friendly, not sure where the free award winning support comes in site seems to only mention support for those that have paid for it on some sort of contract basis. It would seem its in Sage's interest to make the software as annoyingly frustrating as possible in return for future support and training revenue.

1 out of 5 stars Accountants review   July 26, 2006

Accounting software does not have to be "anal" there are other options that are not so anal. Sage probably makes the most anal software.

Every single person that ever uses accounting software makes mistakes - fact. The ability to correct these mistakes does not need to be a cumbersome task. Controls are always required to stop erroneus deletions -yes. Complete audit controls of adjustments and deletions only tend to be appropriate for larger organisations where the risk of fraud by bookkeeping and accounting staff is of more concern. Owner managed businesses do not need fraud controls to stop themselves defrauding themselves.

What you may not know.
Sage offer financial incentives to accountants to recommend their software. Sage heavily markets itself to accountants in order to get accountants to recommend it. Accountants without the knowledge of the software market or an understanding of the clients business may well recommend Sage because it is the easy answer. If your accountant recommends this software ask them "why this software? and not any of the other products on the market?". Check they are actually recommending this software because they know this software and the other software on the market well, and it is suitable for your business not just because its the one that markets itself the most to accountants.

Sage can do accounts. It is not easy to use, it is not intuitive; you make well feel very frustrated when using the software. You tend to need a degree of enthusiasm to actually persevere with the software.

Version 12 isn't much of a change from v11, so feel welcome to read those reviews also.
Sage gets a mixed response from users. Some find it perfect and others find it difficult to use. I can understand both these opinions.
I purchased SAGE Instant Accounts for my small business, despite the negative reports, because it was recommended by my Accountant and an indepedant website. On first installation I found the software to be a bit of a beast, that was not easy to use or self-explanatory. I entered loads of things incorrectly (using common sense, and not actually accounting proceedurs, and as you you can't delete anything (as all good accounting/bookeeping systems should not let you do), my accounts got in a mess. So, I de-installed, and searched the computer for all the "hidden" files, deleting them all. Then I re-installed the software.
This time I read the User Guide carefully, and now I'm the happiest person in the world! Sage Instant Accounts is a blessing! If you take the time to read the User Guide properly, everything is explained and therefore, your accounts are in perfect working order.
Now it's a pleasure to do my bookeeping - and my Balance Sheet actually balances.
Yes, Sage is cumbersome and anal - but that's the nature of Accounting, I'm afraid. Simple accounting proceedure only makes money for Mr Accountant. With Sage, I can take the time, do it properly, and Mr Accountant has no excuses for charging more than the basic price.
I recommend it - but you MUST read the manual, if you want to get the best out of it.
