5 out of 5 stars Amazing so far!   July 18, 2007

I was looking for a webcam to use with MSN messenger, and had trepidations about choosing this one due to the few bad reviews. However,my fears were unfounded! It arrived promptly, with a very clear instruction booklet showing what I had to do in 6 steps! You do have to switch off spyware and anti-virus software, but this should be fairly easy. Then you insert the CD and the software loads in about 10-15 minutes, which isn't bad.You don't have to switch off other things like the Internet either, which is excellent.
As soon as I installed it I could send webcam to people. The audio isn't quite working yet, however I haven't fully fiddled around with this yet. I can recieve audio from other people on video calls though, which is good quality.

The video quality is also good, with a very high detail, and it doesn't freeze too much either,a big hazard with webcams.

The menu, for changing things such as light and sound settings is also very easy to use.

All in all,a thoroughly good buy,I would recommend anyone to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Superb quality and amazing value for money   June 21, 2007

The Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX Plus is a superb example of modern design and functionality.

I was torn between this STX model and Logitech's QuickCam Pro 5000. I went for this model because it's a newer model, other reviewers say the picture and sound quality are the same (or better) and the software is more reliable and robust.

Setup was very easy, but you'll need to download the latest software from Logitech (there's an option during setup to `check for new versions', or similar). I was especially pleased to see the option to `Install drivers only', which works perfectly. However, the Logitech QuickCam software is too good to leave out; it offers more detailed, superbly effective and simple to use setup options, with quick and easy ways to record a video or stills (which you can email - web based and dedicated email clients are supported).

The picture quality is leagues ahead of others I've used and the built-in microphone works excellently (though it's recommended that you sit within one meter, there is a bit of leeway). I didn't realise that this model included `Intelligent Face Tracking' (using the QuickCam software) like the Pro 5000, so that was a bonus but it places heavy demands on the system as it's software based (zooming in and out), not a motion tracking camera. But it is clever, even working with more than one person on camera.

I paid nearly twenty-nine quid for mine (including the headset) and am very happy with it. I note that Amazon now have it listed for just 20 - this is irresistible! Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars good buy for your money   May 13, 2007

Considering it's not the most expensive webcam I've seen, the picture is very clear and of a good quality (confirmed to me by a receiver whom I was chatting to on Skype). The instalation was fairly easy, and the cam has got its own small program where one can adjust settings of light, sound, brightnes etc. It is possible to take a photo or video of yourself with this webcam, store it on your pc or send it. The only downfall is that sending it as an attachment directly from the cam (as you are using it)works only with Hotmail.com! I could not do the same with yahoo. The option is to store the pic or video on to your laptop or pc and send it as an attachment from there.
The webcam design is very decent and goes nicely with my laptop, also sits ok on the top. Might be sitting just a bit more firmer on a pc. But so far I had no problem with it.
The webcam works well with Skype program, I was able to connect straight away. Making a webcam phone call via Skype does affect, however, the sound a bit and it is weaker than making a phone call without using the cam. But it's still highly entertaining and enjoyable.
I have to say that since I have been using this webcam, my computer did crash about 2x. Not sure if it is to do with the new component, but this never happened to me before and my laptop is fairly new. So I have to admit I suspect it is to do with it.
Nevertheless, I do not regret buying this small gadget, it has served it's purpose very well so far and I feel it was not a waste of money.

I did not like the headphones that came with it, if you have a smaller head, it's too big for you and will keep falling off your ears. The mic is also a bit too close to the mouth. I am using my old headset.

5 out of 5 stars Great value webcam   March 26, 2007

I'm pretty impressed with this webcam!

I was looking for a 'cheapie' to chat to my parents over Skype so we bought two of these and was pleasantly surprised bu the all-round package.

It was very easy to install (Windows XP), just install the software, reboot and plug the camera in and you are up & running.

Picture quality is really good considering the price, I even get a decent image in the low-light of my lounge. The built in microphone was a nice bonus too, sound appears to be fairly crisp.

An extra set of headphones with a mic is a nice addition, perfect for my laptop!

I'm sure you could spend a whole lot more on a webcam and not get a lot better performance.

3 out of 5 stars NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS ME !   January 22, 2007

I have a similar version of this which is great, this one I bought for my dad and fiance on the fact that they run Windows ME. Above it states it is compatible, but lok on the box and Logitech website (should have done that before I bought it, I know!) it states Windows 2000/XP only. Would have been 4 stars (based on the almost identical version I own, if not for the dodgy spec requirements stated on Amazon. Also, make sure you follow the install instructions to the letter, otherwise you'll have some problems.
