5 out of 5 stars Buy it! It will change your life! (Seriously :)   August 24, 2007

I'm a web designer / programmer and project manager. So I'm using loads of different kinds of software and also do many different things (ie. playing with numbers and pretty pictures...).
I got one of these for work this week. And I can't believe how much better life in front of a computer has become.
I was pretty rubbish to begin with, trying to get used to it. But after 1 day, I got the hang of it. And by the end of day 2, it became completely natural (and easy to use).
So I am stoked in a big way. You become quicker at doing stuff. I'm going out first thing tomorrow morning to buy one for home. A bit pricey... BUT seriously worth it (and I'm a tight-wad :)...
I cannot recommend it enough! My mouse is history!!! I'm using my mouse now, and it just feels wrong!

I get the impression from people that Wacom is to digital tablets what Adobe is to digital drawing - they'll tell you that you just don't have to bother with the other brands (sorry to any Corel enthusiasts out there, but you'll humour me on that one). Having got my first Wacom I'm comfortable with that idea.

This is such an intuitive device and within minutes of mucking around on Photoshop I'd put away my mouse. Even though I'm a bit stupid, the tablet's buttons I could use instinctively after an hour or two. I'm an illustrator who employs detailed/fine pen & ink drawing and I was very quickly able to replicate closely the way in which I draw on paper, which had been my main concern. An important factor in this regard is the replaceable nib. My accompanying pen was packaged with several harder plastic nibs but included one "felt" version, which is made of compacted fibrous stuff and grips the tablet surface better, making it feel more natural and providing more accurate control for the starting point of every stroke. The only downer is you can't get them separately, though you'll get five in a pack with varied nibs but these are a bit pricey. See the Wacom website and other online sellers.

This rather attractive thing will save a great deal of time in scanning etc, and don't forget it's great to use the pen with the tablet's buttons to navigate around browsers and documents. As a left-hander who has always, for some reason, used a mouse right-handed (I don't know, is that normal?), my mac feels much more tailored to me. And let's be honest here, I am the most important person in the room, after all.

Lastly, unless you use expansive movements when drawing, the A5 size should be big enough, so you won't have to fork out for the bigger ones.

Ok. I am a digital illustrator and designer, and also do some music production on the side, so I'm using the computer a lot during the day, and night.

I used to use a mouse (exclusively) and that was fine. But then I bought a Wacom, and BOOM it was like a dream. I admit it took me a couple of weeks to get used to the new way of working, but once I did, It was like that was the way it should have always been. I use the Wacom almost all the time now, save a few moments when I just fancy grabbing the mouse, or (weirdly) I feel like I shouldnt be wearing away my beautiful Wacom unnecessarily! (Sad I know).

And it WILL improve your work flow. Think about it - draw a smiley face with your hand and a pen, then try the same with a mouse in photoshop, ok you can do it, but it ain't the same, ADD to that pressure sensitivity, and you start getting the real power, thin, thick, in between...BAM you'll be drawing some fly designs in minutes, float into Corel Painter and start painting a fricken Monet (or whatever) Bad ass.

I recently gave that tablet to a friend, and have regretted it ever since, but have just bought a new Intuos3 A5. My old one was an old Intuos3 A6, so you can imagine my excitement as I await the beast!

BUY IT! if you want.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent   March 18, 2007

This is an excellent tablet that integrates into the likes of Photoshop very easily. I moved up from a much smaller tablet and while the desktop footprint of this device takes a little getting used to (And some major desktop tidy-up work) it is well worth the effort.

Notice that I downloaded the latest drivers from Wacom rather than installing from the supplied CD. I did this after reading advice on the web and it has been problem free for me.

The installation is quick and requires a reboot when finished, and I found (On two machines) that the first time I rebooted after driver installation it takes a little while for the tablet driver to load and be ready for the tablet. However, on subsequent reboots this does not seem to be the case and the driver is ready and waiting as soon as Windows has started.

The size of the tablet means that using the pen in place of a mouse is much easier to get used to (This wasn't the case on a tablet half the size). The included mouse worked first time and is just as good as my desktop mouse, although I find it counter-productive to pick it up and place it on the tablet when I want to use it.

I use the tablet only for artwork, so I am not replacing my mouse with it, although I can see no reason why you couldn't just use the table, it would certainly be easy enough to get used to.

The tablet itself is well made and sits very firmly where its placed, with no slipping and sliding, and the configurable buttons (Which can be set to accept any keystroke combination) make using it within applications a pleasure. The scroll/zoom sliders are easy to use and work very well, and can be set up so you can use the pen as well as a finger to activate them.

All in all this tablet is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars A very good early birthday gift   February 26, 2007

I received this a month or so ago: it was an early birthday present from my mother. I was exceptionally excited at the prospect of something that could possibly double my creative productivity. I like to do amateur art: usually Anime/Manga and fantasy art, and I had found that dabbling in digital art with a touchpad and Photoshop was, quite frankly, a nightmare. I ended up just drawing and scanning in - a very tedious, messy and slow process.

So when I saw these tablets, I thought I'd give them a go.
I was worried about the size of the smaller ones (A6), but put off the price of the larger ones (A4 and bigger) and so I settled for this one.

I read the reviews of all the Wacoms and the Trust tablets to see what was best. I admit I was put off a Trust by the reviews... and even some of the Wacoms had varied ratings.

In the end, I went for this.

All I can say is that it has doubled the time I spent creating art ; not because it's slow, but because I spend MORE time doing it, it's such a pleasure to use! The design of the tablet and pen is perfect! It handles like a dream and makes light work of the sort of art I create. It's also a wizz at photo editing and makes life generally easier.

I'd advise anyone thinking about getting this, to go for it! It's pricey, yes, but it's well worth it.
