3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings - good when it works   October 25, 2008

Logitech - Z-5500 5.1 Speaker System
Mixed feelings really : when it worked, the sound was great for the price and it was very versatile in terms of connectivity options. The great weakness seems to be the controller, which worked without problem for about 6 months, then started to malfunction (it would turn itself off, or it would suddenly start recognising and only outputting to headphones that weren't actually there). The on/off button in the centre of the controller seemed a particularly weak link. Mostly, a complete power down and unplug from the mains would sort it out, but that can be qute distracting in the middle of a movie, or whilst battling some monster on your XBox.

Finally after about a year the controller has packed up altogether. It's then that the fun really begins. You find the guarantee no longer covers you, that Logitech don't have the controller units available as spares and that you are faced with junking the speakers and enormous subwoofer. This is very disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars Good speakers....some issues   September 29, 2008
When you first receive this, the first thing you notice is the size of the box. This thing is huge and very heavy. I got home and ripped the paper off the box and opened it. Everything is nicely packed and tight. The sub-woofer is huge and as I was living in a flat, i got a bit worried that this may be overkill as the neighbours would be constantly complaining, but as it happens, the bass is easily managed and isn't too much of a disturbance.

Connecting everything up is easy enough. There are connections on the back of the subwoofer which you connect all the speakers up to and its all very simple. The wireless remote allows you to alter any of the settings you wish.

All in all, these speakers offer fantastic value for money. The only complaint I have is that the frequencies in the mid-level are pretty much non-existent, but this is only noticeable if you are an audiophile (which I am).

As a Mac user, I used the mini-TOS to TOS cable from Maplins to use the optical out features of the Macbook Pro. When you watch a DVD ensure you set DVD player to 'Digital Output'. This should then allow you to listen to Dolby Digital encoded DVD's through these speakers which sounds amazing.

5 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for   September 10, 2008
You have to see this system to true marvel in its glory. It really is versatile, quality and loud. Yes its near 200 for speakers, but you get exactly what you pay for, the best speakers on market...still after 2 years from release!!

5 out of 5 stars Z - 5500   August 29, 2008
I recently ordered this system and it arrived on the said day nice and early.

Not quite as heavy as I expected (although the delivery man struggled a bit). Luckily I had already made adjustments to my room layout to accept to subwoofer, as it is fairly large. I must say it does look a lot different from videos and pictures, not necessarily smaller. It wasn't a trouble to set up, only took about 10 minutes to run cables around my room.

This system sound good for its price, be prepared to spend around 500 for another surround sound system that has a notable increase in sound quality. When through an optical input the sound is nice and clear with both music, movies and games, and keeps its clarity at low volumes. The bass is not quite as loose and `boomy' as I imagined it was going to be.

However I would have liked the subwoofer to go just a little lower than it does, below 30hz, as struggles to pick out some of the lowest notes from a select few of my songs, but that's just me and I'm sure it can go low enough for most other people.

All in all another good, high quality system from Logitech and well worth the asking price, and in my opinion is better than its Creative rival the Gigaworks S750 (which I have previously owned until the amplifier overheated)

3 out of 5 stars Major Fault on Z5500 model   August 20, 2008
I got this product based primary on all the good reviews i'd read, but what most of the reviews leave out is the fact once you switch it on you can't switch it off without the fuse blowing. I've tried surge protectors as recommended by a few people, but they don't make any difference. If any one has bought this product they will know you need to keep a couple of spare 2amp fuses ready for the sub woofer unit.
On the plus side the sound really is quite good, my only gripe would be that the sub woofer does cause a bit of a rattle in the room, so unless you have everything in the room tied down tight the rattle will reduce the sound quality.
