5 out of 5 stars Absolutely superb, a must read for anyone creating websites!   January 8, 2008

I have an ever growing library of books on css, html, (web)design and web development but this is definitely one of my favourites, both for its excellent content and for Beaird's warm, friendly tone. I remember having plenty of "light bulb moments" on the first read and get something more out of it each time I dip in (which is freqently).

The first section on layout and composition is superb and has already helped me improve existing designs (and quickened the process of getting them from paper to screen).

As for the section on colour, hands up those of you who skip the boring techy bit about rgb and cmyk? Me too. But not any more.

Of all the web design books on my shelf, this is the one I'd reach for first if the house were collapsing (assuming family, dog and computer were safely out of danger of course!)

p.s. I can't agree with the earlier review by "sharp" (the only lukewarm review I've ever seen for this book) - take a look around the internet, there are far too many "real web designers" that would benefit greatly from reading this book and applying some of the advice!

2 out of 5 stars Another tidbit for Sitepoint fanboys :(   December 16, 2007

A vacant experience that covers all the basics. If you're a web desinger already you may prefer a book called 'The priciples of sucking eggs', by your granny.

I would have given this a 1 but I had to give it another point because if you're a 15 year old and haven't done any design in school yet, you could actually learn something from this book.

If you're a real web designer and you're looking for something that may actually inspire you, take a look at 'the Zen of CSS design'.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!   August 20, 2007

This is a well written book with useful practical advice. Manages to cover the basics but also some cutting edge ideas. It is concise and to the point. My only (minor) criticism is that I felt the chapter on typography was a little short on opinion and practical advice on choosing a schema, the topic of styling different tags is an important one in the overall design of the site and would have benefited from a more considered treatment. Having said that however, I cannot recommend this book highly enough - absolutely first rate.

5 out of 5 stars Well written and very practical   August 5, 2007

This book is the best book I've bought since 5 years ago. It is well written and very practical. It teaches you how to make things beautiful and this is not limited only to websites. It talks about creating a beautiful layout, choosing the right colours, fonts and images. The book goes on talking about giving your site depth, texture and much more. Above all, it's about 10 cheaper than Waterstones ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to design for the web   June 7, 2007

I like everything about this book! It's a quick read as it's succinct (even though the tone is relaxed and chatty) and there are lots of images. I agree with the other reviewers, the use of example images to illustrate points is very useful. Highly recommended.
