Secrets, Loves and lots of gloss ! December 27, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
If you are looking for an objective telling of the Kathy Kirby story then you will have to wait because this book is not it ! The author, James Harman admits that he is a fan and this comes across in his writing style which is sycophantic and puts more gloss on Kirby's life than she did on her lips. According to Harman, Kirby was an amazing talent who was the most popular vocalist of the 60s, while in reality she had one top ten hit and was an also ran in an era of many mediocre female artists. He claims to have been Kirby's manager but was unable to get one quote from her for the book. He writes what I can only assume was meant as a tribute to his diva, but he succeeds in portraying her as a whinging starstruck spoilt brat who blames everyone but herself for her misfortune - he even bitches about Cliff Richard because his charitable organisation wouldnt pay off the lady's debts, which gives you some idea of how poor this books is.
If you are a huge fan who doesnt mind a book that resembles the problem page of a womans magazine then Secrets,Loves and Lip Gloss is for you. If you would like to read an objective and honest account of Kathy Kirby's life then save your money and wait until someone does the job properly.
Rise, fall ,fall and further fall of a great star May 25, 2007 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
A really good read chronicling the spectacular rise and even more spectacular fall on on Britain's biggest stars of the 60's. I challenge anybody not to be moved by one of the saddest show business stories of our times. Kathy is a true talent, a real star and yet ended up bankrupt and homeless. How the highest earning woman in showbusiness fell from grace is a heatbreaking story. James Harman details every aspect of her career and personal life without ever resorting to an assisination of the charactar. Recommended for anyone who has heard a Kathy Kirby recording and anyone who has not.
Kathy Kirby a great star! April 9, 2006 6 out of 10 found this review helpful
Yes, she is. But I cant believe that this is the best biography of this star available. With such highs and such low in her life it seems that the author has gone for the sensational approach and forgotten a lot of ther times in her life. Mr Harman could have spent more time looking at the early 80's when Kathy was embarking on her comeback. So much more could have been done!! I do presume Miss Kirby has had no artistic control over this as I am sure she would have preferred to see a much more detailed effort. I only hope that sometime in the future there will be a much more fitting tribute rather than a 'quick profit' attempt.
rollercoaster superstar March 19, 2006 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Both my partner and I enjoyed this book so much, written by James Harman. We could not put it down as we had heard it was in the pipeline for some time and eagerly ordered a copy on its release. The highs and lows of Kathy's life are known to many but coming from Mr Harman's angle you could really grasp the exhillarating times as well as the exsasperating times working with this brilliant, if difficult star. The book really is a rollercoaster ride from start to finish...(very scarey in some parts but you still want to get back on the ride!)The book is a fascinating insight to the life of a sometimes troubled icon, yet there are many moments of light and joy and you can feel the respect and raw honesty shine through in what must have been a very difficult task to undertake. We will definately be purchasing copies for friends as presents as we do with Kathy's albums!! Keep the faith as they say. The book has some fabulous photos we have never seen before and we say "Our Thanks To You" James Harman, for keeping this luminous star's memory alive. In the remote hope that the great Miss Kirby graces the stage once more, we are grateful that there are people out there to spread the word. If you are a Kathy Kirby fan you will treasure this book and if you are a newcomer to the Golden Girl, you'll be hooked! Thanks Again Mr Harman!
Brilliant Book March 6, 2006 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
What a great book by James Harman. Could not put it down! An amazing read which gives great insight into the highs and lows of Kathy Kirby's life. Things we never knew about or would have believed. The warts and all of Kathy's life not just the glory days of her career. A life full of much pleasure but equally much pain. Eye-opening and fascinating and we are left with thoughts of what might have been, if only.......To address the critic in Barnstaple: with respect how can anyone in their right mind say Kathy is an "indifferent" singer? You might not personally like her voice and style, but "indifferent" never in a million years. Her voice is fantastic, pure magic! As a great friend of Kathy's, James must have found the writing of this book both exhilirating but difficult and painful, as we found the reading of it. A brilliant and capitivating book. Buy it!
