Love it! December 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I consider this book both an excellent reference and an excellent learning tool. It covers just about everything one would want to know about C#, and it does it to the same depth as the famous CLR via C#. I loved the chapter on threading (which the authors have also published for free on their website) - it's clear, concise, and right to the point. I also like the format of the book - it's small and compact, very good for taking to work and reading on the train. The typesetting is also great, and the diagrams are top notch - a staplemark of the Nutshell series.
A bit of a mess September 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is neither a good reference nor a learning tool. It seems the writer is writing for themselves, deciding to concentrate too much on some items (such as threads) and ignore other items. Be very careful when purchasing this book. It is an advanced book but is it actually useful? I don't think so.
Great reference book but not for the beginner July 23, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
If you're looking for a book to learn C# then this is NOT the book for you. The books assumes you are at the very least familiar with an OO language such as C++ or Java. If you're coming from another background or from a background where there is no programming experience then try another book and then come back to this book later.
What this book is is an excellent desktop reference (just as the title suggests) for the language. I keep it on my desk and use it frequently to find out about overloading members, how you work with dictionary arrays etc. etc. Pick the book up, find the relevant chapter. Read the section on what you're looking for. Put it down.
It's a very technical book. There are no funnies in here. No commentary and no witty authors (thank goodness).
Excellent book. Well worth the money. Once you have it you'll find it invaluable as a reference.
