2 out of 5 stars Mediocre and intrusive   October 17, 2008
Perhaps it's me but a security programme that informs you that threats are present on your computer ('Look, here they are' it triumphantly crows) should allow you to delete them. Oh no, can't do that, it says to me. Best leave them where they are. Oh, by the way, it further states, every time you connect to the internet I am going to pop up and ask you for clearance. Oh, have you already said yes many times and asked me to remember it? Well, never mind. Perhaps I should disable your internet connection until you speak to me more politely.

Now, before I am considered to be a lunatic who speaks to his computer, these conversations and necessarily internalised and contain far mnre expletives as a rule. I cannot, however, really recommend this programme as it continually acts as if it is the first time it has ever been used. Also, whilst it is helpful to keep you informed of adware, spyware or whatever ware you're having yourself, it is rarely unable to remove it. Needs more work I suspect.

4 out of 5 stars Useful upgrade to AVG's free product   October 16, 2008
I have used AVG's free anti-virus software for a while and when this was offered as part of the Vine programme, I was keen to try it. It installed easily enough on my laptop and I initially allowed it to use the default options. I had some irritations with the firewall (like an earlier reviewer) and decided to not to use that aspect of the software, instead using Windows built in firewall that I had been using before.
Unlike other internet security suites I have used, this one gets on quietly in the background (it's scanning the hard drive as I type) but it doesn't noticeably slow the system down which can be really annoying.
Be aware before buying this suite of programs that you can get much of it free elsewhere - eg anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall (built into modern Windows) etc. On the other hand it is nice to have a central control panel for all your security bits rather than having lots of different programs all trying to do their thing at once. If you do decide to go for the all-in-one solution, then you could do far worse than this product.

4 out of 5 stars Safe And Assured   August 28, 2008
A lot of internet protection can prevent you from actually enjoying your time surfing the web. Take Norton for example, constantly warning you that you're in regular danger, in need of a more expensive upgrade courtesy of the same company. No thankyou.

Not only does AVG not bother you, it also refuses to budge in the faces of nasty viruses which are an expanding problem in today's internet world of broadband day-in-day-out, your computer is a regular target no matter who you are, where you are. What you need is something reliable, gutsy and not too irritating. AVG is what you're in need of. I'm sure there are plenty other similar anti-virus products out there that do a similarly flawless job but I won't see the need to change with AVG doing its job for the current time.

4 out of 5 stars Simple but comprehensive software   August 21, 2008
I rate this product as very useful for people new to computer security.

The installation is painless and the software talks you through everything in plain english.

Very intuitive and operates quietly and consistently in the background.

The package is Firewall, Anti-spam, Antivirus ... etc and is basically a comprehensive internet security package.

A good price and updates are regular and relatively quick on a good broadband connection.

No problems and have even recommended it to my sister to install on her laptop (she is more than happy with it)

5 out of 5 stars Complete Cover   August 13, 2008
I had previously used AVG version 6 and 7 which as a single user you can get for a year free of charge from the avg website.

The full version 8 product gives much more protection and help in servicing all aspects of security from firewall, spam, filters, through to virus protection and scanning.

As good as norton but at a cheaper price.
