Good but not perfect November 6, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I also own a 320gb toughdrive and a 160gb WD passport USB drive. Both are pretty similar in use, except the toughdrive (with its integral but short USB lead) is slightly fiddly to connect to my laptop. Also, for some reason the blue activity light in the toughdrive lead sometimes goes out and fails to work for days at a time (a friend's toughdrive also has this problem when used with his PC). More seriously, when leaving the drive connected to my laptop for long periods (say 12-24hrs) it gets suprisingly hot (much more so than the passport) which probably does not enhance longevity or reliability. Finally another reviewer mentioned that the toughdrive is FAT formatted, which would restrict max file sizes to 4gb. My toughdrive arrived (from Play.Com) NTFS formatted, so maybe different batches are configured differently. Despite the drawbacks I'm looking for an additional toughdrive 320gb unit, as it's overall a fairly rugged accessory.
Can't go wrong October 21, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As you would expect from freecom a solid well built drive, enormous amount of space. Agree with another reviewer, not the fastest transfer rate but ultra reliable.
Excellent... August 6, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This hard drive has a lot going for it: it's small, slim and easy to carry, it looks great, it's extremely well designed (rubberised coating, built in retractable USB connector etc.), and it'll still work if you drop it... well that's what they claim and although you're not likely to want to test this feature out there's nothing in these reviews that suggests otherwise - certainly, having dropped a previous Freecom 80 gigabyte portable drive onto concrete and (after sticking the casing back together) been amazed that it still worked, I can believe it. All-in-all the best back-up drive I've owned to date.
Worth the extra for the its capacity and durability August 2, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I chose this drive for capacity (I want full back-ups of two laptops) and durability (it will travel regularly.) It works fine on both a Dell and a Sony laptop, with or without the short extension usb cable provided. I can't vouch for transfer speed as I tend to go and make coffee while it does its stuff, but it's very quiet and gets only slightly warm after prolonged use. I haven't dropped it yet, but feel reasonably confident of its survival were I to do so. The soft silicon covering and general appearance are a matter of personal taste, but I like it because I don't think it will show scratches and scrapes.
In conclusion, I don't regret having paid extra for ruggedness and high capacity even though it's now cheaper than when I bought it.
VERY EASY TO USE July 2, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I am no computer expert but needed a small, simple, portable external hard drive to back up my photos, videos & docs. This was so easy to use,(Vista) & no set up required. The supplied NTI shadow software works a treat. It even looks cool! Thanks also to Amazon for delivery within 24 hours.
