2 out of 5 stars Not so waterproof   January 4, 2009
Bought the camera in October 08, having 'lost' my Ixus to splashed water on the beach. With it's rugged credentials decided this would be a suitable replacement.
Took it to Thailand for its first beach holiday, no problem for the first few dips in the pool. But on the last day after 30mins in the pool had the 'battery cover open' error message. The cover of course was closed properly - after a while hte camera failed to function at all. On inspection found water had entered the battery cover and the USB port.
Suprisingly, a few days later once the battery had been recharged the camera powered up and was ready to go as usual except that there is now condensation on the inside of the lens so it is off back to the shop this week.
Other gripes:
Video recording is poor quality with the brightness fluctuating, also be careful of the strap toggle as when this hits the casing while you record you will hear it bang on the soundtrack
Photo quality is not that great, so need to use your editing software.

Pending the outcome of repairs my recommendation is treat it as a low quality point and shoot for the beach / pool. My wife has a Canon G9 which takes much better photos & video.

3 out of 5 stars Waterproof ?   January 3, 2009
[[ASIN:B0012EPNPU Olympus Mju 1030SW Digital Camera - Platinum Silver (10.1MP, 3.6x Digital Zoom) 2.7" LC

Recently, November 2008 we went to the Maldives, the camera was brilliant for 6 days, both on land and whilst snorkelling, the picture quality was excellent, especially under water, then I took about 20 on land photos - OK. took the camera with me snorkelling and after about 20 minutes and another 20 underwater photos, got the message "Card-cover open" followed by "Before operating the camera in water, please check battery and USB covers for foreign objects"

Checked the camera everything in order, however I could not use the camera again.

When I got home I telephoned Olympus Customer Services, they reported that the contacts needed attention. They then replaced the camera under warranty, within 2 weeks - no complaints with the Customer Services Department. I have not used the replacement camera yet, although I am going to register for their free 2 years warranty before I take it any where wet. - !!!

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch Camera!!!   December 18, 2008
Hi everyone,
I bought this camera after reading numerous reviews and looking on the web for other people's opinions, and i wasn't disappointed.
Some people complain about the picture quality - it is fine for me - i use it on the full 10 Mp setting with fine compression.....and the photos look fabulous. Even when fully zoomed in it looks great.
Some people complain that the buttons are too small, i got used to it straight away even with my medium to big sized hands. Some people mention the fact that your finger gets in the way of the lens, as it is close to the top right, but i managed to avoid that after 2 or 3 photos. The only problem is if you give it to someone else to take a photo. Just tell them to hold it with one hand, and if it drops - who cares!!!

It does feel very solid and great underwater. No leaks whatsoever. Just make sure everything is snapped closed before doing it and you'll be fine.

It is a camera that will last a long time, save youself from buying 2 or 3 over 5 years, this one will do the lot for a long time. It is full of features, and even with the lack of manual controls does each shot perfectly, whether underwater, in the mountains or just out in the pub or something. All the photos were perfect.

One last must have for me, was the fact that when you look through the photos you have taken on the screen, they need to move quick. This does it with ease with no delay like many others out there.

If you are looking for a tough camera that will last and take great shots then treat yourself to this little beauty.

1 out of 5 stars My 1030SW is swimming with the fishes....   November 18, 2008

I bought the camera mainly because of its waterproof feature as I was going to be doing a lot of snorkeling on holiday.
I took some amazing underwater photos and was truly impressed until day 12 of the holiday when it stopped working. An error message reported that the card slot cover wasn't closed properly, when it was most definitely was. After a few hours of this it completely died which was really annoying.

I did a bit of research when we got home and it appears that a few of the Olympus models have this problem - something to do with the cover sensors.
Knowing this I opted for a refund rather than a replacement - which is another good reason to buy from Amazon :)

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R36O5TUZKHDLOE Video footage taken in Sharm El Sheikh using the Olympus 1030 SW camera and an M+ XD picture card which lets you take videos for more than 10 seconds in VGA mode. The 2GB card I have allowed 18mins of continuous video. I was diving around 7 meters with no problems, the camera claims to go as deep as 10. The underwater photos the camera takes are also superb. There is no commentary on the video, let the footage speak for itself.
