5 out of 5 stars Great piece of hardware.   September 2, 2008

I have now got four of these drives. That should be all that needs said. I bought my first one of these terabyte drives over a year ago and have never had the slightest problem with it. The drive works great as soon as it's plugged in. I use these drives to store music, videos, photographs and software and have never had a problem or lost any data. The lack of a cooling fan is very good as it lets the drive run almost completely silent. The drive spins down after a few minutes of idleness but takes only a few seconds to get back up to speed. Only has about 930GB of space but it's normal to not get the full capacity that's advertised.
A few pointers to get started with it though -
- Reformat the drive before using it (to NTFS if you want though not nessecary can be handy when dealing with dvd files etc).
- Don't bother with the software provided with the drive. It works just fine with both Windows XP and Vista with no additional software.
- Keep it in a fairly well ventilated or open spot as without the coolng fan it can build up quite a bit of heat which can damage the drive.

4 out of 5 stars So Far, So Good   August 4, 2008
Been going a fair few months now with no problems (touch wood). It stores most of our DVDs and gets used daily. Cool, and more importantly, quiet and the fact that it sleeps and wakes with your computer is excellent.

Will certainly look at Western Digital again when it's time to upgrade.

1 out of 5 stars Stay away!   July 21, 2008

I used the drive to rip my dvd collection to, as I did not have the space for them. So I used this drive which worked perfectly for the last 3 months, woke up today the drive was dead, will not take any power. I have lost 900 Gb's of video. I am gutted! Stay away from these drives!

Western Digital My Book 2 Essential 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive

I recently purchased one of these drives as the hard drive in my PC was getting very full.

I was very pleased when I first opened the box up as it was much smaller than I had imagined, and the styling of it with the glossy black outer case and the 2 blue LED's on the front.

After swapping the adaptors round on the mains plug and connecting the USB cable my computer detected it straight away and after a quick format from FAT32 to NTFS it was goo d to go.

The only draw back was the length of the USB cable, it is about 1.2mtrs long, but a quick search of Amazon and I have found a 3.6mtr cable for about 9.

Other than that an excellent product.,

1 out of 5 stars Was fantastic until it died after 2 months. R.I.P. 9,000 photos...   July 15, 2008

Bought this as I was switching from PC to Mac. Transferred EVERYTHING over to it, sold PC, bought MacBook Pro, plugged drive in; DEAD. Light comes on, drive's not recognised, then light goes off after about 10 minutes.

I've lost over 9,000 photographs, my iTunes library (inc. some purchases) and untold other stuff. Really upset as I thought WD was a brand I could rely on for this task. I must say though, that they have been very good about arranging a replacement.

So, if you have important data backed up, my advice would be, no matter which backup drive you have, also make backups to DVD, tape or another external drive.
