So excellent I'm buying another one January 8, 2009 I bought one of these a few months ago and have had no problems whatsoever.
With my media storage requirements my drive is now nearly full, and after my experience with it, there will be no hesitation in buying another one to keep mine company.
On firewire 800 its fast, only ever slightly loud during time machine backup, and the auto switch off feature is brilliant!
Buy one!!
Ideal for imac backups using Time Machine December 31, 2008 I have had the hard drive for 10 days now. My iMac recognised it immediately and I had Time Machine set up within minutes. I connected via Firewire 800 and the backup speed is impressive. In operation, the drive is very quiet and certainly not intrusive. Personally, I like the white LED lights - reminds me of Kitt, the car from Knight Rider. . .showing my age!
I'd highly recommend this product.
Broken from new December 29, 2008 As I was plugging in the drive for the first time, I heard a 'click' noise then nothing. It won't even power up. Would NOT recommend.
1 star is very generous, but I suppose it's a nice enough desk ornament.
I've submitted the 'question' to WD support.
Really hopeless December 22, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Set up this drive a few days ago. It was very quiet and vibration free and looks good beside the iMac 24" in its silver plastic housing. I connected it in accordance with some of the advice given in the Amazon feedback/ comments section and everything went fine. Transferred tons of camcorder footage over a couple of days without problem then the system crashed while I was in iMovie 8.0 for mac. Now I cannot access any of my hard work on this drive. The western digital support line just days before Christmas was friendly but useless. Perhaps they were short staffed but I knew more than them and I'm a novice with my iMac 24' computer. Needless to say I'll be returning the drive to Amazon for a refund and won't touch a western digital product again. AVOID.
Works right out of the box December 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Very happy with this piece of kit. It set up simply- connecting the (included) F/wire 800 cable to my G4 Powerbook meant it appeared on my desktop immediately. It is near silent in operation, with only a gentle whirr when being asked to work hard. Completely silent in 'sleep' mode. Transfers data quickly: 46GB of data (all the stuff on my hard drive) backed up using Data Backup 3 in about 45 mins., if I recall.
Being a Mac fanboy I like the fact it's aluminium and has the white multimode 'on' light. Other than that it gets out of the way and does its job. Painless decision; no more backup worries for me...
