5 out of 5 stars Perfect for home use.   August 18, 2008

I obtained th Acer Aspire 5315 just today and I have to say it is a great little laptop.

Okay it's not the best laptop out there in the market... but it is great for general usage such as Word Processing, browsing the t'interweb and sending emails etc.

Comes with an awful lot of junk installed unfortunatly which really slowed the machine down the first time I switched it on - however eventually I managed to remove all the crap and now it works fine.

If you like Windows Vista I would suggest upgrading to Home Premium or Ultimate as Basic is neither use nor ornament sadly...

If like myself however you aren't a fan of the revolutionary Windows Vista then I suggest installing good old Window XP... hey if it's not broke don't fix it eh?

Plenty of USB Ports, an external monitor can be plugged into it, WiFi connectivity and a really nice screen.

I would say this machine is perfect for a student in School, College or University or general home use.

(I feel I ought to mention that if any laptop gets too hot and switches itself off... take off the cover that protects the fans and give the heatsinks a good clean... they can often get clogged with dust which makes the laptop overheat - you could also get a Notebook cooler... good stuff).

Laptop is great for general use, came with allot of unnecessary software installed simply removing it so it doesn't blog down the system helps the speed a little. Overall good laptop for word proccessing / surfing the web.

Had problems connecting to the net after a few weeks. Then the screen went white and red and I now have to pay 174 to get it fixed. So much for a warranty, I would avoid it like the plague.

3 out of 5 stars Windows VHP is not enough   February 18, 2008

Just bought this laptop from Amzaon for my mom so she can chat with us from home.
Laptop is amazing lookwise and featurewise, especially that wonderful webcam. I also got 120 GB HDD with this laptop.
Touchpad is not very smooth & sensitive but bit jerky. Not sure this is laptop or vista's fault.
But overall good machine if you are not using Windows VISTA.
Please keep in mind that VISTA is very hungry OS and Celeron processor is not fast enough and 1 GB RAM is not large enough to run VISTA. I disabled few GUI features from Vista and still memory was 80% full. Still this machine is very slow compared to same celeron running XP.
Also there is a known issue with Yahoo messenger and MSN messenger on VISTA so you can not view other person's webcam. Hopefully updates will come soon for those two most popular messeging tools. I managed to run beta version of yahoo messenger to view other's webcam, but could not manage to run MSN to do the same.
So, if you want decent performance from this machine, install Windows XP or Linux. Not sure if you get webcam driver for linux.

5 out of 5 stars Just A Few Questions   January 29, 2008

I would be looking this laptop for nothing more than surfing the web, sending emails and maybe downloading music and watching a few DVDs. Do not want to pay big money, would this be suitable laptop?
