4 out of 5 stars Beware Mono   December 25, 2008
Having read the reviews on this printer I decided it was as usual a 'see for yourself situation'.
The printer was simple to set up and ran straight off.As expected it used an amount of ink to load but it was not particularly thirsty, another plus ,individual, reasonably priced replacements (well what's reasonable nowadays?).
The printer delivered very good,no,excellent quality colour prints.
For the price and colour results a 5 star rating is justified, so what was my problem?.
I am a serious amateur photographer and print both colour and mono (black and white) photos for comp. and exhibition. When I printed B+W on this printer shadow areas print a definate GREEN.
I contacted Epson Tech, who were very prompt with a reply, however I was told that the printer had been designed as a colour printer to give quality colour prints and I should not expect quality B+W photos from it.They did make some suggestions that may improve the situation,we shall see.
So, value for money and quality of results are excellant ,but if you are looking to print Black and White photos look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Exceeded my expectations   November 21, 2008

We needed a decent photo printer, and had a restricted budget.
For the money, this printer is astounding - we printed over 70 5x7, 50 6x8 and 20 10x8, and used about 20 in ink. I have no issues with the print quality - it stands comparison with traditional wet processed prints in my view. Also bear in mind that epson Claria inks are far more colourfast that dye based inks. No issues with installation, very straightforward - just follow the instructions. We were up and printing inside 10 mins.
Yes the build is flimsy in places, and is not fantastically quiet, but it delivers where it matters most - print quality.

Epson Stylus Photo R285 Printer With Individual Ink Cartridges
Brilliant! Arrived within 3 days, set up with no trouble, software loaded on Vista perfectly. Borderless prints are stunning, disc printing and manual duplex work fine and draft prints are very fast and usable. I am very impressed.

1 out of 5 stars also so unhappy with Epson   October 11, 2008

Wished I had paid more attention to the unfavourable reviews which I had read. My epson printer arrived and I followed the instructions only to find the print head would not move so I could not load the inks and could not use the printer. Went back to the reviews to find this a commom problem. I decided to return the printer and ask for a refund, but in order to do this I was instructed to print the label, but could not do this without a printer. I forwarded instructions on to a neighbour who printed out the labels for me.
I now have a Canon Pixma ,reccomemded by Which magazine. Found it difficult but not impossible to install, and am now very satisfied with it.

1 out of 5 stars The Stylus just aint what it used to be.   October 8, 2008

I have used Epson printers for over 12 years replacing them regularly every year or two (they really don't like compatable inks do they) All have been superb though even though until my old R200 gave up the ghost. I have had nothing but trouble from every model I have owned since then. They jam up they print far to darkly and compatable inks fail all the time in them. I won't be buying another Epson product.
