Excellent camcorder August 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this camcorder after reading all the excellent reviews, not just on the Amazon site. Initially I was looking for a camcorder with an analogue input to enable me to convert my old analogue camcorder tapes to digital. All my old footage was shot with a Sony analogue camcorder, valuable footage of my grandchildren from birth, all now in their teens. I wanted to be able to edit the footage and put it on DVD to hand to the family, and I've done it, thanks to the HV20 and an excellent video editing program.
New footage shot with the Canon is faultless. I have no complaints whatsoever with this camcorder and would recommend it to anybody. Thank you Mr Canon!

This camcorder is well worth the money, if like me, you are looking for good quality DV for editing and putting it on standard DVD then look no further. The sound recording is a bit 'ify' but then so is all small camcorder sound. Get a decent external mic to go with it and you've got a wow! combination. I saw one review which says the HV20 has no earphone socket, this is not true as it has a combo line out/headphones socket which you can select from the menu.Anyway It has HDMI or Firewire, so why would you want line out? I tried the HDMI on an HDTV and it was brilliant but I think high def. editing is some way off yet for most people, it is for me. I'm happy with the true widescreen DV capture and sound from my external mic and I hope to get lots of good footage to edit from it.

****BRILLIANT**** I purchased this for my husband's 70th birthday. He did all the 'leg work' (on the internet) and decided on this one. It must be exceptional as he is not known for holding back on criticism - I have not heard a single complaint after several months of frequent use. Whew!!!! Its always a risk buying without seeing a product first. Well done Canon and well done Amazon for a good product at a competitive price.

I bought this as a cheap way into HD for use on a 55" full HD tv after using a great TRV20 Sony DV model for several years.
The picture quality, particularly on cine mode, is stunning. The detail even on a giant screen is outstanding. This size screen shows up the slightest picture problem on blu ray let alone Sky HD.
1st impressions not brilliant as it feels slightly flimsy and lightweight compared to the Sony but that wears off quickly. The control positioning obviously suits my hands. The memory card I bought separately but at 9 for 2 gig is hardly a problem and the picture quality of stills, especially in widescreen is very good.
I use ordinary dv tapes, which at 1 each for 25, is very cheap bulk storage for work. This is important because you can't load edited HDV back to the camera tape.
This turned out not to be the budget buy I was half expecting but a top quality purchase. Well done Canon & Amazon.
Just brilliant - and well priced March 18, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Having had a Canon Camcorder for 8 years (The MV20i) I am already hooked on the brilliance of Canon. So this move to the next stage was for me merely a point in time of when to buy and what to buy. My old model had most of what I needed in the new but since I do all of my editing on my PC now via Pinnacle Studio - I wanted the option of transferring my edited movie back onto my DV tape and the Firewire in/out option within the HV20 gives me this. I have found the HV20 to be a very user friendly piece of kit that produces just awesome pictures. The ergonomics are mentioned in a few reports and yes I would agree that they dont seem to be placed around a normel persons hand - the zoom dial for example doesnt fit nicely in line with the index finger that is supposed to operate it but, I guess I will get used to it. The problem is that my previous model was so good then these small items need to be commented upon. However, no way would that stop me giving this a 5 star rating. I am also impressed by the photograhic capability at the 3mpixel camera although I would have preferred to have known that I needed to buy memory card so I could have done that at the same time. (256meg recommended) I have now had the product for just over a week and have found it to be just perfect for what I wanted. I must also comment on the brilliant ability to control the sound "in" input via a manual control. This is really useful where you are in a quiet room and the speech you want to pick up is at the other side of the room. Finally no matter what you do - if you have an HD television then invest in HD tapes the differance is just amazing and this is after recording in ordinary mini DV and finding that superb too. Worth every penny.
