1 out of 5 stars AVOID!!!! Ignore previous reviews   November 23, 2008

This is a horrid product. Background: I have at least two 500 GB Freeagents, 1 portable seagate drive and an unbranded external/portable drive. So let us presume that I have enough experience to assert:

1) This is an utterly unreliable product. While it worked, it did not offer any major issues, EXCEPT, it was knocked over while standing on a desk and that was the last of it.

2) I lost nearly 400 GB of data overnight! Having purchased it in Aug. 2007, the entire life of the product was barely 11 months (as it failed in the summer of 2008).

3) Although there is a 'limited' warranty cover, I am afraid to ask as to what it would cover. The best I can hope for is a replacement (while footing the bill for postage, I think) and in any case the data is gone! So much for the claims of reliability.

4) Kudos to the genius who came up with the design idea of making a large (and this is bulky, i.e. not portable at all) drive stand on a tiny plastic stub. Great idea to reduce the footprint of the hardware. Small problem: THE TOP IS HEAVIER THAN THE BOTTOM, hence THE DRIVE SHALL INEVITABLY GET KNOCKED AROUND! Wonder whether this ever came up in the lab test results of this product! Presuming that it went through quality control checks! Sure, the drive is aimed at occupying less(-er) space, like a wobbly free-standing structure. But wait till the wires get tangled and it gets knocked down: ON YOUR OWN WORK DESK!!! Dead cold! So genius designers, 500 GB worth question: What is more important, space saved on the work desk or the safety of the the saved data?!?!?!!!!

As my other (second) Freeagent drive failed under equally unreasonable circumstances, I am well within my rights to contend that we are dealing with a SUBSTANDARD PRODUCT LINE here!! I shall of course make an effort to review the comic/tragic faults developed by the second drive in a separate review (yes, because I feel rather strongly about it and yes, although I don't have enough time for it, it still deserves to be done).

Two drives, same manufacturer, purchased separately, failing within weeks of each other. At this point I am so dissatisfied that I can not heed to any of the (other) favorable reviews which indeed had been a major factor in my decision to purchase these drives in the first place!

For those looking for tough, well built, RELIABLE, quality manufactures, sadly, clearly and demonstrably, this product is not any of these!

PLEASE AVOID!

Unhappy and repentant customer!!

4 out of 5 stars good product; but could be better   November 22, 2008

I liked this product because it looks great and works reliably. It could be better if it worked without power supply; it really restricts portability of the product. Now same product is available in 1TB range; will recommend anyone looking for bigger storage from reliable manufacturer and at economical range.

1 out of 5 stars I can only agree this item is rubish   August 17, 2008

Same problem as so many others are having, unit dead. Mine did start going funny a few months ago also with drive letter allocation...

Don't buy one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent USB External drive   June 7, 2008

This product is fantastic, it is the only drive I could find that has a low power mode where it shuts the drives down when not being accessed. I have this connected to a Buffalo Linkstation Live and have it doing weekly backups to the FreeAgent. This works perfectly.

BEWARE: Do not buy this drive from PixMania! As per previous posts, I ordered mine from Pixmania only to have the drive come up with disk errors. Pixmania customer service was good and they sent me a replacement drive with exactly the same issue, this drive is now on it's way back to Pixmania and I am getting a refund. I bought the same device now from Maplin with no issues. Looks like Pixmania need to address either a batch issue or an issue with their shipping.

1 out of 5 stars The Most Unstable Piece of Hardware Ever   May 7, 2008

The drive worked fine for the first few months. It was only used to store back-ups of photos and my 20GB music collection.
Just 6mths in things started to go wrong. There was no light to the device. Despite wasting 3 hrs trying the various online advice to get it working (involving changing the computer manage settings), it transpired that the plug was faulty and no power being supplied to the unit. This would have been the first thing to check had the site not been so adament that it could be my pc at fault - not reading the hardware. Shortly after, once I used someone elses power supply, I started to receive write errors. This would involve either no folders/files appearing (as though they did not exist - VERY WORRYING), or my laptop could'nt find the freeagent drive. The second scenario would involve me having to disconnect the drive, take it into work, connect it to my work pc, then the drive would kick into life. I would then use it at home for a few days, either at home or work, then the same would happen all over - or i'd get the write errors again.
I am writing this review right now as I have just sent an email to Seagate warrenty dept demanding they take the unit back. The final straw is I have a new laptop with Vista. Worked fine for a week. Just connected my freeagent drive for the first time...Blue Screen mini-dump errors 3 TIMES now! Will not work.
My advice is stay well clear. When I bought this item late last year, the reviews were 4-5 stars on amazon. I notice now the avg has gone right down. Is this because people are now revisiting the score they provided this poor product? Wish i'd gone for the more ugly maxtor drive now.
