4 out of 5 stars Nice design, Good have been brilliant   January 6, 2009
Apple TV 40GB
Pros - rent/buy movies/music/tv shows at a touch of button
stream wireless via itunes or ethernet powerplugs
simple remote, 30 days to watch a rented movie if you havent pressed play then its 48 hours
Cons - Price
TV Shows overpriced as you can get alot on iplayer etc nowadays
Locked to itunes
Overnite to download movies depending on internet connection
found the power plug a bit snug to plug in.

Dont ask my why, I just love apple tv, theres something about it even paying for the odd rented movie and tunes, Though if they have opened it upto other formats rather than locking it to itunes format only, as this would have made this thing fly off the shelves. Having said that itunes is not all bad and works well with the streaming aspect rather than filling up the hard drive. Picture qualitys not bad at all at 720p.

Overall quiet, nice and easy to use, shame though it could have been the best media centre on the market, never know what updates they might bring out in the future, as the latest one added all the movies/trailers etc for the uk.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent but you only need the 40Gb one   December 31, 2008
Excellent piece of kit but don't waste your money on the bigger hard drive as it streams video from your computer while you watch it on TV

New Apple TV 160GB
OK then - this is a nice loking piece of equipment. It installed with no problems at all and because my TV is pre MDCI cable I used the component cable method of connecting - absolutely no problem at all and the picture quality is fairly high - comparable to a DVD. Here's my beef and the reason why I didn't give it 5 stars. I use an IMAC to store my Itunes and to create slideshows from my photographs - the IMAC does this flawlessly. I then create movies from the Slideshows so that I can burn them onto a DVD - I use IDVD for this task and again no problems at all. The issue I have is that once I have created the movies from the slideshows I cannot import them into Apple TV - a bit of a let down really and a problem that is so basic Apple should address it as soon as possible. Also, don't be fooled by the 160GB storage space - it is actually 144GB! The above said I believe that the product is 'futurized' and will, with a few more software updates be an outstanding device providing the essential link between computers and home entertainment.

This is not the best product Apple have introduced as it is still not the easiest to use as most Apple products tend to be. The networking and syncing issues seem to be common problems with most Apple TV users, the most common error is the Apple TV not being seen by iTunes. After several calls to the Apple help line I finally managed to work out all the firewall, security and networking issues that make setting this up a nightmare. The online troubleshooting does not give enough detail on what settings to change to overcome these issues. The syncing also takes ages, to sync around 2000 photos can take 5 hours and when downloading a movie, do it the day before because it takes so long. Forget downloading an HD movie unless you get 20MBps broadband speed - on 2.5mbps it took a whole day. Another issue that most Apple TV owners suffer from is poor wireless networking signal. If its more than 30 feet away from your airport hub, chances are you will have a very weak signal and it will make using the Apple TV slow and frustrating to use. I resorted to using an ethernet connection which created the networking headaches. Another tip - don't buy the 30gb hard drive - you won't have enough room for all your photos music etc. Finally - check out the rip off prices Apple charge to buy movies and TV shows - you can get them on DVD for half the price if you shop around.

Please can someone tell me, can this machine play the short video clips which you can take on a compact camera? I know it shows photos in a slideshow manner to music, but I want to be able to play a number of short video clips via the tv too. Thanks
