5 out of 5 stars reliable, highly upgradeable router   December 6, 2008
this is one of the best wifi routers you can get if you are looking to run alternative firmware (as of 2008) - the GL suffix indicates it runs a version of Linux and not VxWorks making it easily flashable with mid-sized (4mb) firmware distros

specs:

200 mhz cpu
16 mb ram
4 mb flash

pretty reasonable wifi performance too - it outperforms my Netgear dg834gt by a fairly large margin

remember: you will need an ethernet modem such as the Draytech Vigor or the Billion 5200s (both of which have much higher line performance than most integrated units) or one of those free things you get from your cable company

4 out of 5 stars It does what it says on the box   November 25, 2008

I use this router for Virgin Media cable Broadband - it's connected to my Virgin modem and it works fine. I gave it four stars because the installation CD that comes with this router is uterly useless.
Don't bother using it - it doesn't work properly and it WILL NOT make the installation easier.

Instead just type 192.168.1.1 in the adress bar in your internet browser to access the router's settings.

Before you do this:

1. Turn the modem off.
2. Connect router to modem.
3. Connect computer to router via ethernet cable.
4. Turn the modem on and wait for the lights to stop flashing, then turn the router on, and finally the PC.
5. Acess the router settings as explained above (use admin for user/password).
6. To set up wireless select wireless tab:
a) select wireless channel if required or leave the default one
b) don't worry about SES button, leave it inactive
c) select wireless security tab and change security mode to WEP
d) enter anything in the passphrase box and click generate
e) write down the number shown in the KEY 1 box (make sure you copy it EXACTLY)
f) done! now you have secure network and you can use wireless anywhere in the house - the password is the number you wrote down in previous step...

4 out of 5 stars Solid as a rock but setup is a bit clunky   October 18, 2008
I've had a WRT 54GL for 12 months and it has run flawlessly.

My only complaint is the fiddly setting up of MAC address filtering (that limits access to specific PCs). This requires you find out and type in the 12 character MAC address for each PC. Using the MAC address stuck to the bottom of my machine didn't work - turns out my machine has two MAC addresses.

The solution is to pull up the command prompt window and type "getmac" (without quotes). That will give you several MAC addresses and you can feed all these to the Linksys and it will be happy since one of these will be the one it wants.

Netgear, in my experience a less reliable router, has a better interface for MAC filtering. It shows you the MAC addresses of all the PCs currently visible to it, and you just click the ones you want to allow to access.

Still, reliability trumps ease of use when it comes to routers, so Linksys wins.

Linksys WRT54GL-UK, Wireless Access Point Router w/ 4-Port Switch, Black/Blue
Had it up and running in 20 minutes on Virgin Cable. Set up was easy to follow, and I did not encounter any difficulty.
I've been using it constantly over the past few months without any issues.
Connected to it are the following:
4 desktop PCs (2 are wireless - 2 using Ethernet cable) 2 Laptops (wireless) 1 Xbox (Ethernet cable), I PS3 (wireless) and 1 wireless internet radio. I know it's a lot, but I have a family the size of The Waltons!!.

I am on Virgin's 10Mb broadband. The average speed I get on the ethernet wired PCs is 9.5Mb and on the wireless Laptops I get 6.5Mb which is great.
Over all a great piece of gear, that does what it's supposed to do.

5 out of 5 stars Superb wirless router for the home   August 14, 2008
Since installing over 4 months ago I've not had any problems with this router at home. It provides uninterrupted wireless and enables me to use the laptop anywhere in the house. A good bit of kit!
