3 out of 5 stars Good basic backup box   October 4, 2008
I particularly wanted a wireless NAS to live in the loft, then if I get burgled and my PC's taken, I don't think thieves would find the NAS up in the loft under some tatty cardboard.

Installing the hard disk was a bit fiddly, but not too bad.

Configuration was a little clumsy, and I could not get WPA working, had to fall back on WEP (Might be my paranoid Draytek router).

The browser based config tool is not very well constructed in terms of HTML and is a bit confusing.

Having said all that, it works just fine. Very reliable, Norton Ghost backs 3 PC's up overnight (with a bit of careful scheduling to overcome the limitation of wireless.)

Overall, I'm happy with the purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Great features for the price but not for the pro   April 16, 2008

The clever little box is great for sharing files on a network. One of the few NAS drives that have built in wifi.

Even if your home router is not wireless you can use the wifi in this device to not only access files but also get online too.

The problems I found with NAS is
1) The 54g speed of wifi makes it pretty slow to access files once 2-3 users start using it.
2) The external USB connected drives cannot be written to - they are read only.
3) You have to format the internal drive to the D-Link proprietory format. This means there is no way to use an existing drive with data as it will be wiped when reformatted. It also means if you take it out of the device you cannot access the data.

Despite these drawbacks it does have some great features such as being able to link with an existing wi-fi SSID to extend the existing one rather than replace it.

4 out of 5 stars Some restrictions, but overall a useful device & easy to install   April 13, 2008

It "does what it says on the tin" - in a wireless network, I added a PATA IDE internal disk drive, formatted it using the web-based interface that comes with the G600, and was then able to read and write to it from my desktop PC. Installation is easy and the manual is commendably clear. I also plugged in my external USB drive to the G600, and it worked fine. In fact, you can use it with an internal drive, external drive or either. There are some important restrictions though: (1) it only supports drives up to 400gb (2) it only supports read/write with drives formatted with EXT2,FAT or FAT32 (i.e. NOT NTFS). Overall, I'm happy with it.
