1 out of 5 stars Error Plagued!   October 23, 2008
Bought this freecom device recently but had problems with it ever since. Keeps turning off and back on, doesn't accept certain data and brings up error message before turning off. VERY UNRELIABLE. Not good when your relying on something to save your most IMPORTANT work. Not impressed with Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars ToughDrive does what is says it will   July 12, 2008

The built in USB lead is rather short, fine for a lap top I guess but not a PC without the included extra lead. But that aside it worked straight out of the box and still is without a hitch. Included Back-up software is also good.
Amazon service second to none. Bought with free delivery and arrived four days ahead of Amazons own estimated delivery time. Excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely!   March 31, 2008

Been using this product for well over 1 year, never had a problem, love the fact that the cable is built in, so i never have to hunt around for it, and because of the nice soft feel outer casing and tough build, i dont need a case to carry it in. The connection cable could be a bit longer (maybe if it wrapped around the longer edge as well as the short edge?) yes i know you can attach the included extension cable, but that defeats the point of having it built in!!

Ive also got a 250gb Western Digital device, and it is frustrating that you need a separate cable, and that the device itself scratches quite easily, both of which tends to make you want to have a case for the WD drive, which you dont need with the freecom!

Do need to remember to reformat as NTFS if you want to copy large files onto it though, such as Virtual PC images....

4 out of 5 stars Works well but you may need an external power supply   March 24, 2008

Works fine with my laptop but I had problems with my desktop PC this was down to lack of power to the drive

I emailed Freecom and they sent me an external power supply no problems since.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy To Use With Laptop Computer   March 13, 2008

I ordered this USB mini-hard drive to send to my Dad for his birthday. But before doing so I thought it would be nice to pre-load some media on it. I plugged it into my laptop's USB and it just made a ticking noise. I tried it on a second computer (laptop) and the same thing happened so I sent it back thinking it was broken. Amazon was fantastic and sent a replacement before they even received the first one back (which is postage paid).

But the second one did the same thing and it turns out the USB bus on both laptops I use is not high powered enough to drive it. It worked on a desktop. But that makes the unit useless for being "portable" which is what it is intended for.

I am not interested in buying an extra power supply for it because then I may as well have bought a cheaper, higher capacity but larger USB drive of which I already own three (Lacie, Maxtor, WD - no problems with any of them).

Therefore, this product is not fit for purpose. It will work fine if you use it with a desktop computer but not on any of the (Dell) laptops I tried. So think twice about purchase even if you normally use a desktop (or a laptop with a high enough powered USB) because one of the main uses of the drive is to share media between computers. You might lend the drive to someone to transfer some files and it simply won't work on their laptop.

I am sending this back today for a refund.
