5 out of 5 stars sleek PDA with stunning screen and plenty of gadgety oomph!   February 12, 2006

It puzzles me that quite a few people seem to have been disappointed with the T5, because after four months of using mine daily, I wouldn't be without it.

The main shortfalls I've seen reported have concerned the lack of voice recording, of vibrating alarm, and of built-in 802.11b wireless networking (though the latter can be added by a card that plugs into the unit's SD memory slot, which is a less-than-ideal solution). Anyway, the answer to these complaints is clear: if the missing features are on your must-have list then this device isn't for you!

If you can live without those three things, and if you're in the market for a capable and mature PDA which also happens to have enough battery life, CPU horespower, screen quality and memory to serve as a portable entertainment device -- playing games, reading ebooks, listening to MP3s and even watching full movies (add a big SD card and google for "Quality video on palm" to see how) then you won't go far wrong with this one. Bear in mind that Bluetooth is built in, so you can collect mail, surf, do wireless hotsyncs etc. provided you have access to some kind of bluetooth gateway (personally I have a bluetooth USB gadget on my PC), just don't expect to be able to connect from a traditional 802.11 WiFi hotspot. A final feature worthy of note is the non-volatile memory -- having lost the contents of my previous Palm to a dead battery this is definitely a bonus, though I still recommend taking regular backups via hotsync!

If you're trying to decide between this and the newer Palm TX, bear in mind that the latter actually has half the memory of the T5, as well as a slower CPU. What you get in return is 801.11b WiFi -- and probably a little less money left afterwards :-) Unless you absolutely need WiFi in your pocket then you might want to snap up a T5 while they're still available.

No need to add to the reviews but you won't find it cheaper elsewhere, even ebay!

1 out of 5 stars It won't even power up   September 24, 2005

Just received the T5 today. After at least 6 hours charging it won't even turn on!! I'll have to return it and hope that the replacement is better.

That's the frustration with buying things online - if it was from a retail shop I could take it back today and get a replacement. Not sure about the Palm and definitely not sure about buying electronic gadgets online.

5 out of 5 stars Newbie to Palm   September 13, 2005

I purchased this product as a replacement for an ancient organiser (1996!!!!) which had given up the ghost. After much internet searching and reviews read, I decided to opt for the Palm over a Pocket PC. Being a windows PC person I was having second thoughts on my choice.

Was I dissapointed. NO!! It is an easy to use, yet powerful device. It synched flawlessy with my windows XP. Additional software was purchased which allows me to use my microsoft money programme to download bank statements from my PC to the T5. An additional programme was purchased to store all sensitive details (such as PINS, secure web log ons etc) on a 128 Bit encryption programme. Ever have trouble recalling PINS, passwords, emergency telephone numbers, and essential information. No problems now!!

A large 1 GB SD card is recommended as I have placed movies and MP3 files and have downloaded several novels for entertainment purposes. In short, this is a complete office/entertainment tool without the drawback of hauling a cumbersome laptop around. Fits easily into a jacket pocket, no larger than a small diary or mini filofax. (Even in the additionally purchased leather case).

This will be going with me on holiday shortly, and is high in the essentials packing list along with the passport. Although extra expense was incurred buying extras for the T5 ( SD Card, leather wallet, mini IR keyboard, additional software et al) to have the versatility of my PC in my pocket was a price worth paying.

Who needs an I Pod when you can have so much more from a device the same size.

PC users, this product is a breeze to use. Highly recommended.

Having had five palms to date this is the best. But problems arose with Palm desktop it crashed the T5 There is no way of finding, without deleting everything what is causing the fault? I have asked Palm Help no good. To date I have been unable to Hot Sync my T5 I currently use the T3. I never had this problem with any other of my Palms? If anyone can suggest a course of action it would be appreciated.
