5 out of 5 stars The Dogs Biscuits!   August 5, 2005

Forget the I-pod and all the hype, [ nearly 70% of the "followers" holiday people who were on my plane had some sort of the apple I-pod ] INSTEAD buy the Creative Zen Touch/Micro and this amazing gizmo and you will NEVER look back again. One vital thing to remember is that your PC should be bang up to date with the latest critical Windows updates AND also remember to TURN OFF the Symantec Firewall, antivirus BEFORE you install and configure. I forgot to do that and it blew the Soundblaster Wireless receiver through the USB connection! After i got the free replacement i was up and running in 15 mins. Crystal clear stereo sound dudes!

1 out of 5 stars Frustratingly close to being great   June 1, 2005

I've been running this since November 2004, and without fail it freezes every time I use it (somewhere between 1 and 8 songs in). I've invested too much time updating firmware, changing the network, scrutinising the PC. It just DOESN'T WORK. The Remote is a great feature, but of little solace when you want to chuck it across the room because yet again you have to get off the sofa to re-power the unit, flip the remote batteries out and in again, and on occasion reboot the PC. Only buy it if you have the patience of a Saint.

2 out of 5 stars Installation problems   February 5, 2005

Received this product on December 24th hoping to have it working over Christmas. Now in February and the product is brilliant when it works but despite moving the receiver nearer the computer it works one day and the following day it gives numerous problems including the music stopping repeatedly and the remote control seizing up. I have spent over ten pounds on telephone calls to their support team plus e-mails but still the problems persist. I have three computers on a network and they suggested using one computer only with the others switched off. I have tried operating each one with the other two switched off but without success. I do not wish to return the product as I still believe when it works it will be brilliant.

When I received my Wireless Music I made a comparitively favourable report, having got it working after several hours of effort.

Sad to relate, after that first encouraging experience, it never worked again! I have read some of the later reviews with interest, but have concluded that this is a product aimed at music lovers, not at IT gurus, and as such setting it up should be about as difficult as connecting a DVD player, not as fraught as setting up a home network.

The purpose of this review is a) to downgrade my rating of the product to 2 stars (it was briefly good while it worked) and b) to award Amazon a solid 5 stars for making a no-quibble full refund, including return packing costs, within 6 days of my shipping it back to them.

I have to say that after my experience with Wireless Music, I shall be taking a different route to getting my MP3 files connected to my music system. An MP3 player with a 40Gb disk comes a little more expensive than the Wireless Music, but offers portability as well. And it won't expire when my home network moves on to a different standard, as is sure to happen sooner or later. Creative have a good player and there's the iPod, but at the moment I favour the Cowon player at a bit over 200.

I repeat my previous advice: think carefully about this product unless you really like tinkering with your electronics (and have plenty of hair left to tear out...)

5 out of 5 stars Soundblaster Wireless - Kicks Ass   January 11, 2005

I took a bit of a chance with this item as I have no interest in getting to grips with finer points of computer IP addresses etc. After reading George Johnson's review I was suitably emboldened and so far so great.

30 mins to install software, drag in music & get beats blasting from stereo. No lag, glitches & excellent sound quality (CD esque).

I have a general purpose machine - Athlon 1800 - three years old with Win XP. Lots of USB & Firewire devices but no problems/conflicts with any of them. My wireless network is older spec 802.11B (not G) therefore slower with no encryption - performance is however outstanding.

Installation - follow the instructions, especially the sequencing - ie software then hardware.

Software - there are two components - MediaSource & Wireless Music Console. I have to open Mediasource manually after booting up the machine (this is not as per instructions but is no problem) - I have installed the Mediasource shortcut on my desktop. Software is a doddle - if you have experience of other similar types - eg ITunes, Musicmatch etc.

Sometimes you need to allow the remote room to breathe - but performance is still fine.

I hooked up using an optical lead - a good addition if your stereo supports it.

My CDs are now stored away in boxes. Also I use more of my music collection as it is all accessible. CD multichangers are now dead.

Possible Improvements - no ability to stream internet radio or synch multiple receivers so that music can be played simultaneously anywhere in the house.

Overall - really awesome
