4 out of 5 stars Very useful piece of kit - with some usability issues   March 15, 2005

This is a great little device. I haven't used other models, so I can't compare it, but it is equally as good as the remote control built into one of the projectors I use.

The remote control itself fits nicely into the hand. It isn't discrete, so if you like to gesticulate lots, it will hamper your handwaving. There is no off-switch on this unit (as others here have said). I haven't found, however, that the device eats batteries when not in use. In fact quite the opposite, I use it rarely and it is still on its first set. I guess you may have to be quite careful not to put it where the buttons can get pushed (in the bottom of a briefcase, for example).

My only quibbles with it are in terms of its usability.

The big blue pad you can see in the middle of the remote controlls the mouse. It is kindof like a joystick, the harder you press in a direction the faster the mouse moves. If you're anything like me, you'll find this difficult to control accurately. The mouse buttons are underneath as well so it makes it impossible to drag things one handed. So no mouse replacement, but it is very useful for scurrying down to the menu in Powerpoint.

The remote works in two modes. Click the central button and the mouse buttons stop being mouse buttons and become page-up and page-down, the usual keys for advancing and retreating through slides. A minor criticism is that there is no way to tell what mode you are in, so starting of a presentation can dump you back to the desktop if you click the wrong bit (particularly if you set your laptop screen to display 'presenter view').

The final useful bit is the laser pointer at the top, which is good and powerful, and very useful.

I've used it at reasonable range, with the receiver behind me, in a fairly full room, and the signal picked up fine. I don't have to work at super-long distances from the computer, so I haven't pushed it, I suspect.

All in all, its a great device for presenting, and I'd recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Simple neat functional   March 1, 2005

Works well, great for the price. Has just two drawbacks that you'd expect for the price (every other product is at least 3 times the price)

- No off switch so you need to take the battery out when not in use.

- Range is good with clear line of sight i.e. standing speaker at front, sitting audience and PC next to projector at the back. Signal is too weak to get through a room full of people standing. Of course it works best if the PC is at the front of the room!

5 out of 5 stars Stress reduced presentations   November 17, 2004

Being a techie type who loves gadgets, I finally decided to get something to help reduce the stress of running presentations. I checked out what was on the market and settled on this little baby. It fulfils my requirements perfectly: no more dashing up and down meeting rooms to hit 'page-up', mouse or touchpad keys (and getting it wrong, or losing my thread in the process). No more added anxieties when preparing to deliver presentations because I've forgotten which keys do what.

Only one thing to remember, spare AAA batteries; perhaps my only minor criticism is that there is no 'off' switch for the hand held bit. However, according to the technical specs (which I read after I had set it up and played with it, of course) the current drain in 'sleep' mode is just 1 microamp, so pretty darned small. If you don't use the device regularly, say once a month or so, best to just pop the batteries out and store them separately. Carry a spare set anyway, you'll never want to be forced to use the keyboard or mouse again.

The supplied USB extender cable overcomes weird shaped or deeply set USB orifices which exist on some laptops, and is a handy thing to have anyway. Duracell batteries supplied too. Ooh - that's style!

I loved the laser light too; good for exterminating customers....Zap! Fzzzzzz... smoke smoke... (Seriously, be careful it is a Class 2 laser, so keep it out of people eyes)

I run Windows XP on a Viao and the machine recognised it immediately from plug & play. It works up to 10m; I tried it - it does. Being radio it doesn't need line of sight like infrared transmitters, but I guess 10m of metal filled walls might degrade the signal a bit - or very dense headed audience members perhaps. Hmmm...

For Star Wars fans, it's easy to believe that you are wielding a lightsabre. If you've ever been in one of my presentations, you'll wish you could, but that's because my presentations are boring, don't blame the equipment.

Excellent product and easy to use, plug n play and off you go! As a lecturer, this is the best investment for doing onscreen presentations. Having a laser built in for pointing is ideal too! You won't be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Good Low Cost Presenter   October 19, 2004

This presenter has fairly basic functionality but it covers the essentials and means that it's very straight forward to use.
It's easy to navigate through a presentation using the forward and back buttons, and includes a keypad to move the cursor around. The keypad is a bit fiddly compared to a mouse or trackball, but for a presenter it does the job well.
The only negative comment I have is the lack of a power on/off switch. It means that after use I have to take the batteries out so that they don't get drained through buttons being pressed when it's in my bag.

At the price it's a great buy. Even if you don't give many presentations then it's still worth buying.
