| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description Shredder 11 - Many-Time World Computer Chess ChampionNo other program in the past years was able to win as many world championship titles as Shredder. The new version, Shredder 11, is stronger than any previous version, with its performance improved by about 100 Elo points. This was achieved by implementing more effecient search techniques and a new evaluation function which delivers more realistic assessments. Shredder still likes to go on the attack, but is not as speculative as previous versions. The evaluation of passed pawns has also been greatly improved. All of this leads to more reliable and realistic results during your analysis with the computer. A completely new feature is the Opening Advisor, which allows Shredder to handle opening lines much better without the help of an openings book.

This would compliment Fritz 11 very nicely October 31, 2008 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
In my review of Fritz 11 I explained that there was a cheaper and a more expensive version of the same program.
Essentially Shredder 11 is from the same Chessbase stable as Fritz. To my knowledge, Chessbase do not do a cheaper version of Shredder 11. This Chessbase version should therefore carry the included subscription to "Playchess" with all the advantages I have previously outlined. Just be sure to buy a brand new one, preferably still sealed in its original wrap.
It is also possible to get this engine direct from the programmer at http://www.shredderchess.com/.
The Chessbase version of Shredder 11 should be virtually the same as Fritz 11, except that the chess engine and opening book are both Shredder and not Fritz.
Why might you prefer Shredder to Fritz or vice-versa? Well it is purely a matter of taste. Both programs are by different programmers and play chess with different styles. Both will play in the same Chessbase interface. Whilst Shredder is renowned for its positional play and closed games, Fritz is inclined to be more open and active although recent versions have toned this down slightly.
Personally I prefer Fritz but in an ideal world you would have both. The advantages of having both come to the fore if you regularly use a chess program to analyse your own games. If you don't like what one engine is telling you, get a second opinion from another one!
It can be great fun, and very instructive to watch these two square off against each other in an engine match. You can sit there safely assured that whoever loses it won't be you!
Indeed Chessbase currently offer about 6 different chess engines which can all work in the same interface, of which Fritz and Shredder are just 2. Clearly this is beyond the scope of this review.
You may have noticed Amazon also offer Deep Shredder 11. Apart from the price, the difference is that the "Deep version" can be configured to work on PC's with multiple processors, (it can support a machine with up to 8 processors). The advantage is that more processors equates to more speed and a stronger chess program.
The Deep version will marginally out-perform the single version on a single processor machine but not to the extent that it is worth paying double the price for it. The single version will suffice for most people.
