Very disappointed! July 15, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
It lacks any substance, with regards to design ideas or business advice. I was surprised that Ms Yarwood-White would put her name to such a poorly, ill-thought-out book, with incorrect information. (Pearls are NOT formed when a grain of sand enters the shell of a mollusc). The `books' only saving grace, ( for me) would be chapter 1, working and consulting with brides. Chapter 2: materials and tools, basic, very basic info, available in any jewellery book(here, you will find a picture and description of a beading needle, tape measure, lighter and scissors! Chapter 3: History and symbolism of wedding and engagement and wedding rings(NO design element here) I could go on and on about how irrelevant this book is, as an inspiration for wedding designs...
I would NOT recommend this book to anyone
Unimpressed yet inspired February 12, 2008 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This book has beautiful photos of Claire Yarwood White's work yet these are suprisingly limited in quantity. All the way through reading the book I felt that Yarwood-White was holding back; perhaps not wanting to impart too many of her trade secrets or ideas. Some of the examples were disappointing and I cannot imagine Claire Yarwood-White actually selling some of the very basic and ugly designs (in my opinion p.57) My favourite pages were the ones about hair pins; however I think most people could figure out how to make them from a photo as they were very simple. I think this book is unsure who its audience is; the ideas are too basic and obvious for the professional however the new bride would find half the book rather irrelevant. This book has a small selection of excellent ideas but however when taken as a whole most people would find it to be a generally disappointing book.
Not so much a book October 8, 2007 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
As an oversized leaflet promoting her work.
There were some useful points raised, but much of it skirted the actual techniques, and frankly her pricing theory is just bizarre!
Very nicely presented, but not a lot of substance
Too many topics? September 12, 2007 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
Not too sure who this book is designed for? Bit of a jack of all trades - covering setting up and running a small business, how to offer a bespoke service, information on types of engagement and wedding rings and some jewellery making techniques.
I was expecting it to be devoted to making wedding jewellery, and was hoping to learn new techniques and get design inspiration, so came away a bit disappointed as not enough of the book was devoted to this.
But for those not already in the business and wanting a book to point out many of the things to consider and help decide whether or not to set up this particular kind of business, then this book may well give inspiration.
Stunning Book! June 13, 2007 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
Wow - this book is beautiful! I bought it as soon as it was released, and have worked through most of the projects now - they are so simple, straightforward and easy to follow, but the finished pieces are gorgeous and look sleek and professional... I have made my best friend a crystal-and-pearl tiara with matching earrings for her wedding, and little matching hair pins and bracelets for her flower girls. I'm not a jeweller, but the instructions make it so simple - it's really just playing with beads and wire, although you would never guess it looking at the lovely finished pieces. The projects can be tweaked for everyday use as well, or for glam nights out - lovely necklaces, elegant drop earrings, etc. The photos are wonderful and magaziney - not your usual naff meringue-bride wedding shots at all. And there is useful information about wedding and engagement rings, choosing diamonds, etc. All in all, a fab book, highly recommended. Get your hands on a copy before it sells out!
