A faithful companion October 17, 2008 I bought this to help me use the software, as most people will have done. I'm reasonably literate with software packages generally, as well as photographic concepts and techniques. However, there's so much to CS2 that a reference book really was in order. This book is a bit too big to be a vade mecum, but then I don't use CS2 on a laptop so that doesn't matter. The book makes great reading on a cover-to-cover basis, and is easy to dip into if you've forgotten something and need a quick refresher. Thoroughly recommended.
An excellent book ! December 30, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Martin Evening's CS2-book is just what a lot of Photoshop-users need: A practical "how to do it"-book, written in an easy way with lots of good illustrations and examples. It covers the whole aspect from the very basics to the advanced - and Evening is an excellent teacher ! I really liked this book and strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their PS-skills !
Photoshop Book October 5, 2006 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
This is an excellent book for anyone that uses CS2. It will satisfy the basic user as well as the advanced. It goes into good technical detail which I liked. Rather than just giving you settings to try, it explains what you are doing. I like this approach as you learn a concept as opposed to learning what numbers to type and buttons to push. Those totally new to Photoshop might find this a little hard going but stick with it! Martin Evening knows a great deal about PHotoshop and this is clearly evident in his book. If you're looking to make some simple adjustments to your digital images or take on full blown digital remastering then I highly recomend this book, which is accompanied by a tutorial CD.
Good - if you LOVE reading and reading and reading.......... September 27, 2006 19 out of 33 found this review helpful
As a relative newbie to photoshop - this book covers pretty much everything you need to know to get the effect you need.
The books biggest downfall is the wording - its not particually user friendly throwing his explanations down the pan at times. This was more than tad annoying as i just wanted to "get on with it".
When trying out examples and found i had to re-read sentences to make sure that i was following him.
Also - although he explains how to produce the effect in both windows and on a mac, ALL his examples are shown on a mac. Its not rocket science to follow his instructions to get the effect on your pc - however, it would have beeen a lot quicker for me if i had got windows screenshots to follow - and i wouldnt have had to read through so much of his waffel.
Im gonna keep my copy at the moment - however i will be buying other books that are more user friendly just to speed up the learning process. Surley not everyone likes to spend weeks in front of their PC. I would personally like to be able to get what i want out of photoshop fast and then get back out there taking the pictures that i love!!!!!
Professional quality imagery for everyone August 30, 2006 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
Firstly, don't be put off by the word professional in this title's sub-heading. If you're serious about digital photography at any level and want the very best from your images, this is certainly a book to have in your library. Martin Evening has used his expertise in both photographic technique and Photoshop to produce a reference which is highly informative and easy to follow. This weighty tome explains in superb detail how to employ Photoshop to fix, enhance, manipulate and output your finished images.
The content is split into logically linked chapters. Beginning with a run-down of the program's new features, it goes on to show the steps to streamline your workflow - everything from configuring Photoshop's workspace, choosing the right computer for your needs and even how to get the best from your studio space. It continues with the basics of image editing and on to more complex topics including repair, montage, special effects, preparation for print - both for home and industry - and publishing on the web. There are numerous examples and projects; many of which have video tutorials on the CD to accompany the text and illustrations. There is a definitive section on colour management, an essential subject to grasp to ensure your images look as good on the page as they do on the screen. There are also very useful explanations of image resolution and organising and cataloguing your files.
A highly recommended book.
